What is happening at Nagpur airport?
GMR Airports took over operations of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, in June 2026 under a 30-year concession. It plans about ₹300 crore of immediate upgrades, a new integrated terminal and cargo terminal within about four years, and a second runway within about eight years, raising capacity from roughly 3 million to 30 million passengers a year.
| Phase | Timing (from start) | Main works |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | 12 to 18 months | Terminal refurbishment, more check-in counters, self check-in |
| Phase 2 | Years 3 to 4 | New integrated terminal (4 million passengers a year initially), more aircraft stands, new cargo terminal (20,000 tonnes a year), parking |
| Phase 3 | Years 5 to 8 | Second runway, new ATC tower and technical building |
GMR received about 1,000 hectares, with about 100 hectares for city-side development including an Aerocity, and plans long-term cargo capacity of 150,000 tonnes a year, tying in with MIHAN.
What does it mean for south Nagpur?
The airport sits next to MIHAN on Nagpur's south side. More flights, cargo and an Aerocity add jobs and visitors on the same corridor as Wardha Road, Jamtha and the Outer Ring Road. For buyers outside Nagpur, better air links also make owning and visiting a Nagpur home easier.
HoABL Nagpur Marina is about 20 to 22 km from the airport by road via the Outer Ring Road, roughly 30 to 40 minutes, by our estimate.
